Chapter 8 - Vanessa Finally Told the Truth—Part of It

By evening Vanessa had moved from denial to calculation.
She sat in the downstairs parlor as if this were all a misunderstanding caused by emotion.
Daniel stood over her.
“You threatened my son.”
“You’re overreacting.”
“You struck him in the face with a riding crop.”
“He stole from me.”
Daniel laughed once.
It wasn’t a sound Vanessa had ever heard from him.
“Stole what?”
She hesitated.
“That memory card.”
“No. He protected it.”
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
“You have no idea what that card means.”
“Then tell me.”
She stood up.
“I was trying to protect you.”
Daniel just looked at her.
Vanessa exhaled sharply, realizing charm was useless now.
“The card has footage from your office,” she said. “Footage you were never meant to see.”
“By whom?”
“Your father.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
His late father had owned the home before him, along with a chain of commercial properties and most of the family investment structure. After his death, Daniel inherited a large estate—but only after a messy probate period Vanessa had inserted herself deeply into.
“What about my father?”
Vanessa’s voice lowered.
“He changed more than one version of his will before he died.”
Daniel said nothing.
“He left almost everything in trust for Ethan and Sophie. Only Ethan and Sophie. I got nothing. You control it while they’re minors, but I get nothing—not now, not later.”
The room went still.
Daniel had known the children were protected.
He had not known Vanessa had learned the exact terms.
She met his eyes.
“That card proves I found out. That’s all.”
Daniel held her stare.
“No. That card proves you found out. The other card proves what you did after you found out.”

For the first time, Vanessa had no comeback.
