Chapter 1 - THE TEMPERATURE

Ethan Miller did not remember the drive to St. Catherine’s.

He remembered pieces.

The front door hanging open.

The smell of burned milk.

Emily collapsed beside the kitchen island.

Noah wrapped in a gray blanket, his tiny body hotter than Ethan believed a human body could become.

Then red lights.

A paramedic shouting numbers.

A siren cutting through afternoon traffic.

The automatic emergency room doors opened, and Ethan ran through them carrying his seven-day-old son against his chest.

“Help them! Please!”

Noah made a weak sound.

Not a cry.

More like air escaping.

Behind Ethan, paramedics rushed Emily through the doors on a stretcher. Her face was pale beneath the oxygen mask. One arm hung loosely at her side until a nurse lifted it back onto the bed.

The emergency department erupted into motion.

Nurse Kelly took Noah.

Another nurse cut open Emily’s sleeve.

Dr. Sarah Collins moved between them with the kind of calm that made everyone else move faster.

She checked Noah’s temperature.

104.8.

Then Emily’s pulse.

Then the bruising around Emily’s wrist.

Her expression hardened.

“Who was caring for them?”

Ethan tried to breathe.

“My mother... and my sister.”

The room went still.

Only for half a second.

But Ethan felt it.

Dr. Collins looked toward Nurse Kelly.

“Call security.”

Ethan stared.

“What?”

“And notify the police.”

“No.”

He stepped forward.

“There’s a mistake.”

Dr. Collins opened Emily’s medical chart.

Her eyes moved down one page.

Then another.

Ethan’s fear became anger because anger felt more useful.

He slammed his fist against the bedside monitor.

The machine crashed to the floor.

Alarms filled the room.

Two security guards rushed inside.

Ethan raised both hands.

“I’m not trying to hurt anyone!”

They restrained him anyway.

“That’s my wife!”

Noah cried weakly from the warmer.

“That’s my son!”

A police officer entered and blocked the doorway.

Dr. Collins accepted a second chart from Nurse Kelly.

She looked directly at Ethan.

“There’s something you need to see.”

He stopped struggling.

Dr. Collins opened the file.

Then paused.

May you like

Not because she was uncertain.

Because whatever came next would change the family before anyone knew whether Emily and Noah would survive.
