Chapter 8 - MARGARET’S RETURN
Margaret returned voluntarily after three days.
She walked into a police station wearing a navy suit and carrying a lawyer’s card.
Calvin Price did not accompany her.
He had been arrested for conspiracy, forgery, insurance fraud, and obstruction.
Margaret claimed she returned because she loved her family.
Harper asked why she fled.
“I was afraid Ethan would misunderstand.”
“Your grandson was dying.”
“I trusted the hospital.”
“You had not called one.”
Silence.
Margaret’s defense took shape quickly.
Emily was unstable.
Lauren panicked.
The heat packs were traditional care.
The sedative was accidental.
The guardianship petition was prudent planning.
The insurance policy was routine estate protection.
Every action had a clean explanation.
Then investigators recovered messages between Margaret and Price.
Day 3 after birth:
If the baby has a medical crisis before thirty days, the trust reverts.
Day 5:
Emily is documenting everything.
Day 6:
Create a record of instability.
Day 7, 9:44 a.m.:
Today may be the last clean window.
Price replied:
Do not write details.
That sentence mattered.
It proved they knew details existed.
Lauren accepted a plea.
She would testify.
Margaret called her weak.
Lauren answered, “You taught me survival meant agreeing with you.”
