Chapter 7 - EMILY WAKES

Emily regained consciousness after twenty-two hours.

Ethan sat beside her.

She looked toward the empty bassinet.

“Noah?”

“In intensive care.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

She cried before her body had strength for it.

Ethan held her hand.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“Leaving.”

“You went to work.”

“For not believing you.”

That was closer.

Emily remembered pieces.

Margaret calling her hysterical.

Lauren taking the phone.

The heat.

Noah screaming.

The pill.

Then the floor.

She had tried to crawl toward the bassinet.

Margaret stepped over her.

That image remained clearer than the slap.

Not violence.

Indifference.

Emily revealed a secret.

She had contacted an attorney before Noah’s birth.

Margaret pressured her to sign a postnatal guardianship agreement “in case Emily became unstable.”

Emily refused.

Then someone entered her hospital portal and changed emergency contacts.

Margaret became primary.

Emily changed them back.

That was why she installed the kitchen camera.

She did not trust them.

Ethan asked why she never told him.

“I tried.”

He remembered.

She said his mother frightened her.

He called it conflict.

She said Lauren watched the house.

He called it anxiety.

She said papers disappeared.

He told her to rest.

Each dismissal had sounded reasonable alone.

Together, they built isolation.

Emily did not forgive him because he apologized once.

She said, “You do not get to become safe because you are sorry.”

May you like

Ethan accepted it.

That became the first honest step.
