Chapter 9 - THE TRIAL
The prosecution began with the ER.
Ethan running.
Noah burning.
Emily unconscious.
Dr. Collins asking one question.
Who was caring for them?
Then the chart.
The camera.
The messages.
The trust.
The insurance policy.
The guardianship plan.
The delay.
One sequence.
Margaret’s attorney attacked Emily first.
Postpartum exhaustion.
Anxiety.
Conflict.
He showed messages where Emily called Margaret dangerous.
“Were you biased against her?”
“Yes.”
“Then you interpreted ordinary caregiving as threatening.”
Emily looked at the jury.
“I installed the camera because ordinary caregiving should survive being recorded.”
The video played.
Margaret placing the heat packs.
Lauren restraining Emily.
The forced medication.
The call to Price.
The wait.
No explanation softened it.
Lauren testified.
She admitted taking the phone.
Holding Emily.
Leaving the blanket.
Fleeing.
The defense asked why the jury should trust someone seeking leniency.
Lauren answered, “Because the camera proves the parts I wish were lies.”
Ethan testified last.
His role mattered.
He had not committed the crime.
He had built conditions where Emily’s warnings carried less weight than Margaret’s confidence.
The defense tried to use his guilt.
“You now blame your mother because your wife blames you.”
“No.”
“You want to preserve your marriage.”
“Yes.”
“So you need a villain.”
Ethan looked toward Margaret.
“I needed a mother. That is why I ignored the villain.”
Margaret took the stand.
She cried.
Said she loved Noah.
Said she wanted to save the company for him.
The prosecutor asked, “Why insure his death?”
“Estate planning.”
“Why forge Emily’s signature?”
“Administrative necessity.”
“Why sedate her?”
“I did not intend—”
“Why wait twenty-three minutes before calling anyone?”
Margaret said nothing.
The prosecutor held up Noah’s blanket.
“You believed the trust could not tell whether a baby died by illness or design.”
