Chapter 13 - Rosie Stopped Trusting Birthday Cake

For weeks, cake made Rosie quiet.

Not terrified.

Just watchful.

At a neighbor’s birthday party, she stood behind me while other children rushed toward the dessert table.

“You want some?”

She shook her head.

That hurt more than I expected.

Birthday cake had become connected to a room full of adults eating while she cried.

So we stopped pushing.

No:

Come on, sweetheart.

No:

See? This cake is safe.

Just choice.

Her therapist helped her rebuild control around ordinary party things.

She chose whether doors stayed open.

Whether photographs were taken.

Whether relatives touched her.

Whether she wanted cake.

One afternoon she asked me:

“Can we make cupcakes?”

I said yes.

She decorated every one with too many sprinkles.

Then she ate the frosting first.

I nearly cried over a cupcake.

That was recovery.

Not forgetting.

Not pretending the bathroom never happened.

Letting ordinary things become ordinary again.
