Chapter 3 - The Recording Started With Everyone Laughing

The video began while Rosie was opening gifts.

She was happy.

That detail hurt most.

She sat in her hoodie beside the birthday table while everyone sang badly and Bethany stood behind her chair.

Then Bethany looked toward Daniel’s phone.

“Keep recording.”

My mother asked:

“What are you doing?”

Bethany smiled.

“Teaching Rosie not to be so dramatic.”

My father laughed.

“About time.”

Daniel’s camera shifted slightly.

He asked:

“What are you planning?”

Bethany whispered something the microphone didn’t catch.

Then my mother said clearly:

“Just don’t let her father see until she calms down.”

I paused the video.

Played it again.

Same sentence.

Not:

Don’t hurt her.

Not:

Maybe this is a bad idea.

Don’t let her father see.

They expected Rosie to become upset.

They expected to hide that from me.

And they were still treating it like entertainment.

The recording continued.

Bethany told Rosie there was another present waiting in the hallway.

Rosie followed her willingly.

Daniel stayed behind with the phone.

That meant the bathroom itself was not on camera.

But the audio carried farther than anyone realized.

About ninety seconds later, faint crying could be heard from down the hall.

My mother glanced toward the sound.

Then kept eating cake.

Nobody stood.

Nobody asked what was happening.

That was the first moment I understood why the dining room had looked so normal when I came back carrying my injured child.

It wasn’t because they didn’t know she was crying.

They knew.

May you like

They simply believed whatever Bethany was doing was acceptable.
