Chapter 8 - Daniel Had Failed Rosie Too
I wanted Daniel to be the good adult in the story.
He wasn’t.
He was the adult who eventually preserved evidence.
That mattered.
It did not erase the earlier failure.
I asked him directly:
“You heard her crying. Why didn’t you go down that hallway?”
His eyes filled.
“I should have.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because every time I challenged Bethany around your parents, they made me feel like I was overreacting.”
“That’s your answer?”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“That’s my explanation. My answer is that I was a coward.”
He told me he kept filming after Bethany returned because her comment frightened him.
He thought if he stopped recording, everyone would later deny what was said.
That instinct turned out to be useful.
But he also could have put the phone down and checked on Rosie.
Both truths mattered.
Daniel gave police every clip he had.
He also gave them access to the family group messages.
Then he separated from Bethany.
Not because I asked him to.
Because the videos forced him to see a pattern he had spent too long minimizing.
He told me:
“I kept thinking my job was to avoid embarrassing my wife.”
I answered:
“Your job was to stop a child being hurt.”
He nodded.
“I know that now.”
That was not redemption.
