Chapter 1 - The Barbecue Where My Son Screamed for Me

By the time I turned around, my son was already on the ground.

Leo was pinned low on the manicured grass beside the buffet tables, his pale-blue shirt twisted up at the collar as Javier Cole restrained him with one rough forearm pressed across his neckline and one hand gripping his shoulder. My nine-year-old was crying, struggling, terrified. A few feet away, my daughter Mia stood frozen in her cream summer dress, too shocked to even scream.

Then Leo did.

“DAD! HELP ME!”

That sound hit me harder than any punch ever had.

One second earlier, I had been speaking to two guests near the drinks station at the far side of the Romano estate’s backyard. The family barbecue had been in full swing—bright afternoon sun, loaded buffet tables, polished patio furniture, relatives mingling across the lawn. The next second, all I could see was Javier with his hands on my child.

I didn’t think.

I moved.

I charged straight across the lawn, my heart pounding so hard it felt like it was tearing through my ribs. Javier looked up too late. I grabbed him with both hands and drove a brutal shove into his chest and shoulders.

He flew backward.

He slammed hard into the buffet table.

CRASH.

Serving bowls, silver trays, plates, and half the food on the table exploded across the stone patio and grass. Leo instantly scrambled free and stumbled behind me, grabbing onto the back of my suit jacket with shaking hands. Mia rushed toward her brother and clung to his arm.

I stepped between Javier and both of my children.

“TOUCH MY SON AGAIN AND YOU’RE DONE.”

Javier pushed himself up from the wreckage of the table, food smeared across his navy polo, his lip split from the impact. But instead of backing off, he smirked at me like he still thought he had the upper hand.

Then he came at me again.

“You think you can push me around?”

He stormed right up on me.

I didn’t retreat.

Leo and Mia stayed behind me, trembling.

Javier lunged first.

I reacted faster.

My front kick drove straight into his abdomen with everything I had behind it.

THUD.

He was launched backward into the large mobile outdoor grill beside the serving area. The grill collapsed sideways in a shower of metal trays and toppled utensils. Javier hit the ground beside it, stunned and gasping, but still conscious.

No second kick.

No second shove.

Just silence.

Guests froze all over the backyard.

My son clung to the back of my jacket.

My daughter pressed herself against his side.

I stared down at Javier with a kind of fury I had never let anyone see before.

“You just forgot whose family you touched.”

For a moment, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

But as I looked at Javier lying beside the wrecked grill, I realized something that made my blood run even colder than the sight of my son pinned to the lawn.

Javier hadn’t grabbed Leo in anger.

May you like

He’d grabbed him in panic.
