Chapter 5 - The Blue Envelope Shouldn’t Have Been There

The next morning, I went straight to the outdoor kitchen area with two members of my home security team.

The mobile grill had been rolled under a weather cover overnight, but no one had touched it since the party. I opened the side storage compartment myself.

There it was.

A large blue envelope, bent at one corner.

Inside were copies of transfer records, contractor invoices, and one unsigned property authorization form connected to a land acquisition deal I had personally halted six weeks earlier.

I knew those documents.

Or at least, I should have.

Because they were not supposed to exist in that form.

The halted deal involved a parcel near the riverfront—land my company had considered purchasing before I discovered irregularities in the environmental report. The seller wanted us to move quickly. Javier had been pushing hard for it. Too hard.

When I stopped the deal, he’d acted disappointed, but not angry.

Now I knew why.

The papers in the envelope showed that someone had continued moving pieces behind my back.

Worse, one of the contractor invoices listed an advance payment from an internal discretionary account that only two people had access to.

Me.

And Javier.

He had hidden corporate documents in a grill cart at my family barbecue.

Because he planned to move them that day.

And my son had caught him.
