Chapter 4 - Leo Had Seen Something He Was Never Supposed to See
That night, after the guests were gone and the estate had finally gone quiet, I sat with Leo in his bedroom.
Mia had fallen asleep on the window seat because she refused to leave her brother alone. I let her stay there while I sat on the edge of Leo’s bed and asked the question I’d been waiting to ask.
“What did Javier want?”
Leo stared at his blanket.
Then at me.
Then he whispered, “The envelope.”
“What envelope?”
“The blue one.”
My stomach tightened.
“What blue one, buddy?”
“The one in the grill cart.”
I frowned.
Leo explained in broken pieces. He had been looking for a soda near the serving area when he saw Javier pull a blue envelope from inside a metal storage compartment built into the side of the mobile grill. Leo thought it looked important because Javier shoved it deep under a tray and glanced around before closing the compartment.
Then, a minute later, Javier saw Leo watching.
“He asked if I told you,” Leo whispered.
“What did you say?”
“I said no.”
“Then why did he grab you?”
Leo looked down.
“Because I said I was going to.”
That was it.
Not anger.
Not discipline.
Not an adult losing control.
