Chapter 1 - THE DOLL

Sarah Parker had learned to throw things away quickly.

Receipts she could not afford to pay.

Photographs that made Chloe ask where her father had gone.

Envelopes addressed in handwriting she did not recognize.

Anything that made the apartment feel smaller than it already was.

The rag doll had arrived in a plain cardboard package three days earlier.

No return address.

No note.

Only a faded cloth face, black yarn hair, and a blue cotton dress that looked as though it had been sewn by hand.

Sarah found it lying on Chloe’s bed that evening.

She picked it up by one arm and carried it toward the kitchen trash.

Her five-year-old daughter appeared in the doorway.

“Daddy sent her!”

Chloe rushed forward, hugged the doll against her chest, and pulled it away.

Sarah froze.

Harrison had been missing for ninety-one days.

The police called him a voluntary disappearance.

His company called it an internal matter.

Victoria Vale, the elegant wife of billionaire investor Charles Vale, had called it unfortunate.

Sarah called it impossible.

Harrison would not leave Chloe.

He might leave Sarah.

Their marriage had not been perfect.

But he would not disappear without saying goodbye to his daughter.

“Who told you Daddy sent it?” Sarah asked.

Chloe’s small fingers tightened around the doll.

“She did.”

“The doll?”

Chloe nodded.

Sarah almost laughed.

Then she saw the seriousness in her daughter’s face.

“Did someone give it to you?”

“It came in the box.”

“I know. Did someone talk to you?”

Chloe shook her head.

“Daddy said she would come.”

“When?”

“Before he went away.”

Sarah knelt.

“What exactly did Daddy say?”

Chloe looked down at the doll.

“He said, ‘Keep her safe until Mommy is ready.’”

A chill passed through Sarah.

Harrison had given Chloe instructions before he disappeared.

He had told a five-year-old to wait for a doll.

And Chloe had kept it secret.

That night Sarah checked the package again.

The shipping label had been printed from a kiosk in New Jersey.

Their apartment was in Pennsylvania.

The sender name was blank.

The postage had been paid in cash.

She placed the box on top of the refrigerator.

The doll remained in Chloe’s bed.

At 3:00 a.m., Sarah woke to a faint tearing sound.

She stepped into the hallway.

A thin line of light came from Chloe’s bedroom.

Sarah opened the door.

Chloe sat cross-legged on the floor with the rag doll in her lap.

She was pulling stitches from the doll’s stomach.

“What are you doing?”

Chloe jumped.

Her face went pale.

Then she carefully reached inside the opening.

She pulled out a small bundle wrapped in waxed cloth.

“Daddy said hide it.”

Sarah’s heartbeat quickened.

Inside the bundle was a silver USB drive and a folded handwritten note.

The handwriting belonged to Harrison.

Sarah,

If this reaches you, assume I failed to come home.

Do not call my office.

Do not trust anyone connected to Vale Meridian.

Trust Chloe before anyone else.

The drive contains the beginning, not the whole truth.

Do not open the door for Victoria.

H.

Sarah read the last sentence twice.

Then the apartment door shook under a violent pounding.

Chloe clung to the doll.

Sarah grabbed the laptop from the kitchen table and inserted the USB.

One video file appeared.

No title.

No date.

She opened it.

Harrison’s frightened face filled the screen.

He was sitting in a dark room.

His tie was gone.

There was dirt on his collar.

He leaned close to the camera.

“Sarah, if you’re watching this, they already know I found—”

The video cut to black.

The pounding came again.

Sarah removed the USB and slipped it into her pocket.

She crossed the hallway and looked through the peephole.

Victoria Vale stood outside.

She wore a cream coat over a black dress.

Her dark hair was perfectly arranged.

In one hand she held the empty cardboard shipping box.

She looked directly at the peephole.

“Open the door, Sarah.”

Sarah stepped back.

Chloe hid behind her.

Victoria did not knock again.

She simply waited.

Sarah whispered, “How did you find us?”

May you like

Victoria answered through the door.

“Because Harrison wanted me to.”
