Chapter 8 - HARRISON’S SECRET
Sarah met Harrison in a guarded hospital room.
He looked thinner.
Older.
His wrists were bruised.
She stood beside the bed without touching him.
“You used Chloe.”
His eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“You lied about Victoria.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe our life began when we met.”
“It did.”
“No. It began in the middle of something you never told me.”
Harrison looked away.
“I wanted one part of my life Charles could not reach.”
“He reached it anyway.”
“I know.”
“Why did Victoria deliver you to him?”
“Because Charles threatened her brother.”
“Why did she come back?”
“Because I told her where the evidence was.”
Sarah laughed bitterly.
“So everyone had a role except me.”
“You had the only role that mattered.”
“What was that?”
“Keep Chloe alive.”
Sarah stepped back.
“That is not love, Harrison. That is an assignment.”
He closed his eyes.
“I know.”
She wanted him to defend himself.
He did not.
Then he told her the final secret.
Harrison had not joined Vale Meridian only to expose Charles.
Years earlier, in Boston, Harrison altered a report that would have implicated Victoria in fraud.
He did it because he loved her.
That alteration allowed Charles to avoid investigation.
Charles later used the same report to blackmail both of them.
Harrison’s first lie helped build the empire he later tried to destroy.
He was not an innocent man trapped by evil.
He was a man whose fear created consequences.
“Did you ever love her after you married me?” Sarah asked.
Harrison answered carefully.
“I never stopped caring whether she survived.”
“That is not what I asked.”
“No.”
Sarah studied him.
“Did you love me?”
“Yes.”
“Was any of it real?”
“All of it.”
The answer did not heal her.
But it was not empty.
The federal case moved toward trial.
Harrison agreed to testify and plead guilty to obstruction connected to the old Boston report.
Victoria pleaded guilty to conspiracy, fraud, and unlawful detention.
She received a reduced sentence for cooperation.
Charles faced racketeering, kidnapping, fraud, identity theft, bribery, and attempted murder charges.
Sarah filed for legal separation.
Not divorce.
Not yet.
She needed time.
Harrison accepted it.
Chloe visited him after doctors approved.
She climbed onto the chair beside his bed and placed the rag doll in his lap.
“You came back.”
Harrison cried.
“I did.”
“Mommy said you made mistakes.”
“I made many.”
“Did the doll help?”
“Yes.”
Chloe touched the torn stitching.
“She needs fixing.”
“So do I,” Harrison said.
Chloe considered this.
“Mommy knows how to sew.”
