Chapter 4 - BOSTON
Victoria agreed to meet in a public place.
Grant arranged surveillance.
The meeting took place in a hotel restaurant near the courthouse.
Victoria arrived alone.
She wore no jewelry except a plain wedding ring.
Sarah sat opposite her.
“What happened in Boston?”
Victoria looked toward the window.
“Twelve years ago, Harrison and I worked for a consulting company that investigated corporate fraud.”
“You were together?”
“We were partners.”
“That is not what I asked.”
Victoria met her eyes.
“Yes.”
The answer hurt more than Sarah expected.
“How long?”
“Two years.”
“Did he leave you for me?”
“No. He left because of Charles.”
Victoria explained.
Charles Vale had been building the shell-company network long before Vale Meridian became famous.
Harrison and Victoria discovered evidence linking him to bribery and procurement fraud.
They prepared to report it.
Charles learned about the investigation.
He threatened their families.
Then he offered Victoria a choice.
Marry him.
Help control the information.
Or watch Harrison be charged with crimes Charles had committed.
Victoria accepted.
Harrison vanished from Boston and built a new life.
He met Sarah months later.
“You married a man you knew was a criminal?”
“I married a man who could destroy everyone I loved.”
“And Harrison let you?”
“He thought I betrayed him.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
Victoria did not defend herself.
She became Charles’s wife and public partner.
In private, she monitored his network.
She passed small warnings to Harrison over the years.
Eventually Harrison joined Vale Meridian under a false understanding.
Charles believed he had returned for money.
Harrison had returned to collect evidence.
Sarah looked at her.
“So my marriage was part of an investigation?”
“No.”
“How would you know?”
“Because he tried to leave the operation after Chloe was born.”
Victoria placed a photograph on the table.
Harrison held newborn Chloe in a hospital room.
The picture had been taken through glass.
On the back, Harrison had written:
I finally have something more important than revenge.
Sarah’s anger shifted.
Not gone.
Changed.
“Why did he continue?”
“Charles discovered who you were.”
Victoria’s voice lowered.
“He threatened Chloe.”
Sarah felt cold.
Victoria continued.
“Harrison agreed to remain inside the company. In return, Charles stayed away from you.”
“Until now.”
“Until Harrison copied the wrong file.”
“What file?”
Victoria looked toward the surveillance camera.
“Not here.”
A man entered the restaurant.
Gray suit.
No tie.
Victoria’s face changed.
“Leave.”
Sarah turned.
The man looked ordinary.
Then he placed one hand inside his coat.
Grant’s officers moved.
The man ran.
He was caught in the hotel lobby carrying a suppressed pistol and a photograph of Sarah’s apartment door.
His name was Adrian Cole.
He worked for a private security firm contracted by Vale Meridian.
Charles denied knowing him.
Cole refused to speak.
Victoria disappeared before officers returned to the table.
She left behind a room key.
Inside the hotel room, police found a safe.
The code was Chloe’s birthday.
The safe contained a second USB.
And a handwritten message from Harrison.
Sarah,
The first drive proves the money.
The second proves why they will kill to protect it.
Victoria knows where the third is.
