Chapter 1 - The Smile At The Cliff Edge

Claire Carter knew something was wrong before she ever reached the cliff.

Her five-year-old daughter, Lily, had been afraid of the ocean for weeks.

Not the beach.

Not waves.

The cliffs.

Every time they drove near the high bluffs north of town, Lily’s small hand tightened around Claire’s fingers.

“Don’t go there, Mommy.”

At first Claire assumed Vanessa had frightened her accidentally.

Vanessa Carter was Daniel’s new wife.

Blonde.

Beautiful.

Sharp enough to hide cruelty behind perfect manners.

Claire and Daniel had divorced two years earlier, and Daniel had remarried quickly.

Lily never adjusted to Vanessa.

The child came home quieter after custody weekends.

Sometimes clingy.

Sometimes afraid to sleep.

Once Lily whispered:

“Vanessa said bad girls can disappear where the water is.”

Claire asked Daniel about it.

He laughed.

“Lily has an imagination.”

That was Daniel’s favorite answer whenever truth became inconvenient.

Then came the message.

We need to talk about Lily. Meet us at the north overlook.

Claire called Daniel.

No answer.

Called again.

Nothing.

Lily saw the location and immediately began crying.

“Mommy, don’t go.”

Claire crouched beside her.

“Did Vanessa take you there before?”

Lily nodded.

That was enough.

Claire drove.

The clifftop was brutally bright that afternoon.

Blue ocean below.

Wind tearing across pale rock.

No guardrail.

No protection.

When Claire reached the open overlook, she heard Lily scream.

The sound came from ahead.

Claire ran.

Vanessa stood at the cliff edge.

She had Lily trapped tightly from behind.

Lily’s pale pink dress whipped violently in the wind.

Her white shoes scraped against loose rock.

Vanessa screamed:

“ONE MORE STEP AND SHE GOES!”

Claire stopped only for an instant.

Then she ran straight toward them.

She grabbed Lily and yanked her hard into her own arms.

The moment her daughter was free, Claire turned and delivered one fast open-palmed slap across Vanessa’s face.

SLAP.

“DON’T TOUCH MY DAUGHTER!”

For one brief second, Lily was safe.

Then Vanessa lunged.

She shoved Claire hard in the upper body.

Claire’s heel slid.

Lily screamed:

“MOMMY!”

The ground disappeared.

Claire and Lily went over the cliff together.

No one saw where they landed.

No one saw whether they survived.

Seconds later Daniel came running from behind.

Too late.

“CLAIRE! LILY!”

He dropped to his knees at the edge and looked down toward the ocean.

Vanessa stopped several feet behind him, breathing hard.

For a moment Daniel looked destroyed.

Then something changed.

The horror left his face.

His shoulders relaxed.

And slowly—

a smile formed.

Without turning around, Daniel said:

“IT’S FINALLY OVER.”

Vanessa’s face collapsed into shock.

Daniel kept staring down.

Smiling.

And in that exact instant, Vanessa understood something Claire had not known until it was almost too late.

Daniel had not come to stop the tragedy.

May you like

He had come to make sure it happened.
