Chapter 11 - Claire Had To Tell Lily The Truth Carefully
Lily asked the hardest question in the hospital.
“Why didn’t Daddy save us?”
Claire wanted to lie.
Wanted to say he didn’t understand.
Wanted to protect whatever remained of Lily’s childhood.
But false comfort had already caused too much damage.
So Claire answered carefully.
“Daddy made a very bad choice.”
“Did he want us to fall?”
Claire’s throat tightened.
“I think he knew something dangerous was going to happen.”
Lily stared at her.
“Does that mean he doesn’t love me?”
That question nearly broke Claire.
She took Lily’s hand.
“It means whatever he felt, he did not protect you the way a father should.”
Lily thought about that.
Then:
“You protected me.”
Claire nodded.
“I tried.”
Lily leaned against her shoulder.
Claire did not tell her about money.
Or trusts.
Or conspiracy.
Not yet.
Children deserve truth.

But they deserve it in pieces small enough to carry.
