Chapter 14 - Lily Had To Learn The Ocean Was Not The Enemy

Recovery did not happen when court ended.

Lily still woke screaming.

Still refused to stand near balconies.

Still cried when she saw cliff photographs.

Claire never forced exposure.

Therapy came slowly.

Drawings first.

Then stories.

Then safe beaches.

No high places.

No dramatic “conquering fear.”

Just ordinary experiences.

At first Lily drew the same picture repeatedly:

Mommy.

Lily.

Cliff.

Dark figure behind them.

Months later, something changed.

She added a small blue boat below.

The boat that rescued them.

Then another drawing.

A beach.

No cliff.

Then a house.

Then cupcakes.

One afternoon Claire realized Lily had gone three weeks without drawing the cliff at all.

She said nothing.

Some healing should not be announced too loudly.

It should simply be allowed to happen.
