Chapter 4 - Vanessa Had Been Building Lily’s Fear
Vanessa rarely mistreated Lily openly.
That was what made her effective.
Around Daniel, she smiled.
Around guests, she praised Lily.
Alone, she changed.
She told Lily her mother was unstable.
That Claire cried too much.
That Daniel was getting tired of “drama.”
Whenever Lily mentioned the cliffs, Vanessa said:
“Don’t tell Mommy silly stories.”
Whenever Lily asked why Daniel wanted more custody, Vanessa said:
“Because good fathers protect children from bad decisions.”
Lily was five.
She didn’t understand manipulation.
She understood tone.
She knew Vanessa sounded pleased when Claire was frightened.
Then one night Lily woke from a nightmare and told Claire something stranger.
“Vanessa said you might fall.”
Claire froze.
“What?”
“She said if you keep making trouble, you’ll go away like a bird.”
“Did Daddy hear that?”
Lily nodded.
“What did he do?”
“He said, ‘Not in front of her.’”
Claire stared at her daughter.
Daniel had not told Vanessa to stop.
He had told her not to say it in front of Lily.
That was the first moment Claire began wondering whether Daniel was not merely failing to control Vanessa.
