Chapter 4 - THE CANCELLATION LETTER
The letter Claire placed on the desk was not a credit card notice.
It was a formal termination of all access privileges associated with her identity, security credentials, spousal authorizations, charitable sponsorships, executive introductions, and inherited family trusts.
Adrian had built more than one financial pathway through her name.
The platinum card was simply the one Vivian noticed first.
Federal agents searched Adrian’s office that afternoon.
They found copies of Claire’s signature.
Scans of her military identification.
Old travel itineraries.
Internal contact lists.
Photographs of access badges.
A voice recording library containing fragments of Claire saying:
Approved.
Proceed.
I confirm.
Release the funds.
The phrases came from ordinary conversations.
Adrian had recorded her for years.
He used them to construct authorization calls.
The system was crude compared with professional synthetic voice software, but good enough for companies that expected him to speak on behalf of his wife.
Investigators found a folder titled FAMILY CONTINUITY.
Inside were draft documents giving Adrian authority over Claire’s assets in the event of incapacity.
Vivian was listed as secondary controller.
The supporting declaration described Claire as increasingly paranoid, aggressive, and unable to distinguish professional threats from family matters.
The date had not been entered.
The narrative was already prepared.
If Claire discovered the fraud, Adrian intended to call her unstable.
If she pursued him, he would present the investigation as obsession.
If she attempted to revoke access, he would argue she lacked capacity.
The slap in the Manhattan office became useful evidence for him.
By evening, a short video clip appeared online.
It showed only Adrian reaching toward Claire and Claire striking him.
The beginning was missing.
The wrist grab was barely visible.
The security officer stepping forward made the scene appear even more dramatic.
The caption read:
ARMY COLONEL ATTACKS EX-HUSBAND IN CORPORATE OFFICE.
Claire watched the clip once.
Then turned it off.
Adrian had released it through a public relations firm within two hours.
