Vivian looked toward Claire.
“Because I finally understand that love without accountability is only permission.”
Claire did not forgive her in that moment.
But she believed the sentence.
Adrian took the stand against advice.

He said everyone benefited.
He said no one was harmed.
The prosecutor displayed the convoy report.
“Was Captain Bell harmed?”
“No one died.”
“Was the wounded service member harmed?”
“He received treatment.”

Adrian shifted.

“I did not create the system.”
“No. You studied where it would tolerate you.”
