The financial case became criminally urgent when the missing equipment was linked to a field incident.
A medical evacuation convoy operating in Eastern Europe experienced a communications blackout.
Replacement batteries had been ordered through Northstar.
The batteries never arrived.
During the blackout, the convoy lost contact with regional command for twenty-three minutes.
No one died.
But a wounded service member’s evacuation was delayed.
The delay could have been fatal.
Claire read the field report alone.
She recognized the officer who signed it.
Captain Aaron Bell.
He had served under her years earlier.
The report contained no emotion.
Operational reports rarely did.
But Claire knew what twenty-three minutes felt like in the field.
Adrian’s fraud was not only numbers.
It had entered the space between a person needing help and help arriving.
Northstar executives began cooperating.
They claimed Adrian designed the billing structure.
Adrian claimed they did.
The company’s chief financial officer produced emails showing Adrian approved shell vendors.
One vendor was owned by Vivian’s cousin.
Another belonged to an old college friend.
A third existed only as a post office box.
Then investigators found a transfer for nine million dollars to a foundation called American Valor Initiative.
Claire recognized the name.
She had appeared at its launch.
Adrian stood beside her in the photographs.
The foundation claimed to support military families.
It funded private travel, political donations, real estate purchases, and a Manhattan art collection.
