Chapter 8 - THE LETTER BEHIND THE LETTER
The cancellation letter contained a reference number.
That number led to a sealed audit packet.
Inside were financial charts, access logs, procurement records, and a list of twenty-seven entities connected to Adrian.
But one document surprised Claire.
A letter from her late father, General Michael Bennett.
It had been stored in a family trust file Adrian attempted to access after the divorce.
Claire’s father died ten years earlier.
He had never trusted Adrian.
Claire thought the distrust came from personality.
The letter revealed more.
Michael Bennett had encountered Adrian’s father during a contracting investigation in the 1990s.
The elder Whitlock was accused of inflating transportation invoices during a humanitarian operation.
The case collapsed when witnesses withdrew.
Michael wrote:
Claire, if you ever read this, I was wrong to remain silent because I feared interfering in your marriage. Adrian does not ask for trust. He builds situations where refusing him feels disloyal. That is not trust.
Claire read the letter three times.
Her father had seen the pattern.
He said nothing while alive.
He believed silence respected her choices.
Instead, silence left her alone inside manipulation.
The letter did not rescue her.
It hurt.
But it also explained why Adrian targeted military logistics.
The Whitlock family had used contracting systems for two generations.
Not through one massive theft.
Through small tolerances.
Inflated invoices.
Friendly approvals.
Unused oversight.
Everyone assuming someone else had checked.
