Chapter 1 - The Barbecue Table That Went Silent

The Montaro estate garden looked flawless beneath the afternoon sun.
White flowers framed the stone terrace. Linen-covered tables stretched across the manicured lawn. Guests in formal clothes moved between champagne stations and a large food buffet stacked with pasta, roasted vegetables, breads, and silver serving trays.
Three-year-old Emmett Montaro carried one plate of creamy spaghetti with both hands.
He had helped make it.
That mattered to him.
The tiny blond boy had spent part of the morning in the catering tent proudly stirring sauce with a wooden spoon while the chef humored him. When the first plates came out, Emmett carefully carried one toward the family tables.
Lucille Montaro stepped into his path.
Sixty-eight.
Ivory lace dress.
Pearls.
Rafael’s aunt had spent most of the reception watching Emmett with an expression that made him nervous without understanding why.
She suddenly struck the underside of his plate.
SPLAT.
Creamy spaghetti flew directly across Emmett’s face.
Noodles hung from his blond hair.
Sauce splattered over his cream formal suit.
For one stunned second, he did not move.
Then his face crumpled.
Celina Montaro laughed from nearby.
“EVEN A DOG WOULDN’T EAT THAT.”
Emmett wiped weakly at his face.
His hands only smeared the sauce farther.
Then the tears came.
“Dad…”
He sniffled hard.
“I made them myself.”
Only after Emmett finished speaking did Rafael enter the terrace.
He had been greeting several elderly relatives near the estate doors.
Now he saw his son.
Covered in food.
Crying.
Guests watching.
Something inside Rafael went instantly cold.
He walked directly toward Lucille.
Reached down.
Grabbed a handful of the same spaghetti from the ground.
Then threw it straight into her face.
SPLAT.
Noodles and cream sauce covered Lucille’s cheeks, pearls, hair, and ivory lace.
She recoiled in disbelief.
Rafael stepped in front of her.
His open hand struck once.
SLAP.
Lucille went down onto the terrace, stunned but conscious.
There was no second strike.
Derek Montaro charged from beside the buffet.
Rafael turned.
One decisive front kick drove into Derek’s torso.
THUD.
Derek flew backward into the large food buffet.
CRASH.
The table collapsed.
Serving trays, dishes, bread baskets, and food scattered across the terrace.
Derek landed beside the wreckage.
No second kick followed.
Rafael immediately pulled Emmett safely against his side.
Mia stood nearby, frozen.
Celina no longer looked amused.
Every guest had gone silent.
Rafael looked down at Lucille.
His voice became frighteningly calm.
“YOU REJECTED MY SON. YOU REJECTED THIS FAMILY.”
Lucille stared up at him.
And something changed.
The humiliation disappeared.
So did the anger.
Fear replaced both.
Rafael noticed.
He did not yet understand why.
But he recognized one thing instantly.
His aunt had expected him to become angry.
May you like
She had not expected him to say those exact words.
