Chapter 8 - The Food Was Chosen Because Emmett Was Proud of It

Rosalie, the estate chef, provided another piece.
Emmett had asked that morning if he could help make pasta.
Rafael’s late wife used to cook with him.
The boy barely remembered her, but he had one photograph of himself as a baby sitting in her lap while she rolled pasta dough.
Rafael had told him the story so many times it became part of Emmett’s own memory.
So the spaghetti mattered.
He was proud of it.
Lucille knew.
The chef had heard Celina say:
“Make sure he carries his own plate.”
At the time, it sounded harmless.
Now it sounded calculated.
Destroying something Emmett made would produce a stronger emotional reaction than knocking away random food.
And a crying child would produce a stronger reaction from Rafael.
The plan had been crude.
May you like
But emotionally precise.
