Chapter 11 - The Governance Meeting Did Not Go the Way Lucille Expected

At nine the next morning, twelve voting family members gathered around the Montaro conference table.
Lucille arrived prepared.
Photos from the wedding.
Statements about Rafael’s slap.
Video of the broken buffet.
A draft resolution calling for temporary removal.
She spoke first.
“Whatever happened before, no chairman can behave this way publicly.”
Rafael did not interrupt.
When she finished, he stood.
“I agree.”
Lucille blinked.
He continued.
“My response to what happened was excessive in parts. I am not going to lie about that.”
The room shifted.
Lucille had expected denial.
Defensiveness.
Anger.
Instead Rafael placed the emails on the screen.
He won’t lose control over business. He will lose control over the boy.
Then:
The reception gives us witnesses.
Silence.
Rafael looked at every person around the table.
“You wanted evidence of my judgment. Fine. Judge it.”
Then he looked at Lucille.
“But judge the people who used a three-year-old child to manufacture that evidence too.”
