Chapter 1 - The Mop Water on the Marble

Helen Parker was already on her knees when Grant walked into the service hall.
The polished marble floor reflected the late-afternoon light from the foyer beyond, but the scene itself felt ugly and raw. Helen knelt beside her cleaning cart, shoulders curled inward, one trembling hand gripping the edge of the bucket. Vanessa stood over her in a deep-red dress, furious and elegant at the same time, as if cruelty were just another accessory she had chosen for the day.
With both hands, Vanessa swung the long mop handle and whipped the wet mop head straight across Helen’s face.
Dirty water splashed over Helen’s cheek and hair. She jerked sideways, eyes filling instantly.
“Can’t clean the floor?” Vanessa snapped. “Then clean your damn face.”
Helen lowered her eyes, trembling with humiliation, but Vanessa still wasn’t satisfied. She threw the mop onto the marble with a hard clatter, grabbed the bucket with both hands, and tipped the entire contents over Helen’s head.
Murky water rushed down Helen’s hair, apron, and shoulders. She curled inward, crying now.
“That’s where trash belongs,” Vanessa said.
At that exact moment, Maya Reed rushed in from the back hall and dropped beside Helen, trying to steady her. And then Grant stepped through the double doors from the foyer, took in the discarded mop, Helen drenched on the floor, Maya holding her up, and Vanessa standing over them like a triumphant executioner.
Vanessa turned toward him.
Grant’s face hardened.
He crossed the room in three strides and stopped inches from her. “You did this to her?”
Vanessa’s jealousy flashed hotter than shame. She pointed at Helen and shouted, “What the hell is going on between you and that woman?!”
Grant’s jaw locked. Then he raised one hand and slapped Vanessa hard across the face.
The crack echoed through the service hall. Vanessa lost her balance, fell to the polished marble, and slid several feet across the floor.
She stared up at him in stunned disbelief.
Grant remained standing over her, rigid with rage.

And Helen, still shaking on the floor, whispered something Maya barely caught: “The study… check the study before she gets there.”
