Grant opened the envelope with hands that were steadier than he felt.

Inside were two things.

A letter.

And a second photograph.

The photograph was simpler than the first. No family crest, no formal setting, no careful inscription from Theodore. It showed Helen in a plain nightgown sitting in a hospital bed, exhausted and pale, cradling a newborn against her chest. Lillian sat beside her, younger and heartbreakingly beautiful, one hand on the baby’s back.

On the reverse, in Lillian’s writing, were the words:

Grant had to stop reading for a moment.

When he finally unfolded the letter, he found no dramatic confession, no plea for absolution.

Lillian wrote plainly.

She told him she had loved him from the moment Helen first let her hold him.

She admitted she had asked for what should never have been hers to ask.

She said she and Helen had spent years loving him from different distances, and that the arrangement had damaged them both even while it saved him from the ugliness of Theodore’s family machine.

Then came the line that changed the entire shape of the day once again.

Grant’s head snapped up.

“My uncle Steven?”

Helen closed her eyes. “I prayed she never found him.”

Vanessa went still.

Grant folded the letter slowly. “You spoke to Steven?”

Vanessa did not respond.

Maya did. “She did more than that. I heard her on the terrace two nights ago. I didn’t know who she was talking to, but she said, ‘If Helen opens her mouth before the wedding, we lose the timing.’”

Grant looked back at Vanessa.

Her face had gone colorless.

And for the first time, the scheme looked bigger than one vicious fiancée trying to marry into clean power.
