Chapter 3 - The Missing Box Behind Theodore Parker’s Portrait

Grant had never paid much attention to the hidden cabinet before.
His father had shown it to him once, years ago, when Grant was barely out of college. “Every old house has at least one secret compartment,” Theodore had said with a smile. “This one holds documents too tedious to steal.”
Grant had laughed and forgotten the whole thing.
Now the cabinet stood open behind the portrait, the lock scratched, its small shelf nearly bare. Only a single torn scrap of black velvet remained caught against the corner hinge.
Grant picked it up and felt a chill run through him.
The velvet box had been there last week. He knew it because he had asked Helen, half-jokingly, what she was always protecting so fiercely. She had smiled in that quiet, careful way of hers and said, “Something your father asked me to guard until the right time.”
He had assumed it was an old family letter or a sentimental keepsake.
Now it was gone.
Grant went back downstairs holding the torn velvet scrap in his fingers. Helen was seated now on a narrow bench beside the service door, wrapped in his jacket. Maya stood protectively behind her. Vanessa remained near the staircase entrance, composed again on the outside, but far too watchful.
Grant held up the fabric. “What was in the box?”
Helen looked at it and closed her eyes. “A letter.”
“From who?”
“Your father.”
Grant frowned. “To me?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you have it?”
Helen hesitated just long enough for Vanessa to speak first.
“Because she’s been hoarding things that don’t belong to her for years,” Vanessa said coldly. “I told you this.”
Grant ignored her. “Helen.”
Helen’s voice broke. “Because he told me to keep it until you turned forty-two. Or until he was gone and you were finally ready to hear what he had done.”
Silence swallowed the hall.
Grant stared at her. “What had he done?”
Before Helen could answer, Maya stepped forward. “There was something else in that cabinet too.”
Grant turned to her. “What?”
“An old photograph,” she said. “I saw it this morning in the box when Helen checked on it.”
Vanessa’s expression changed only slightly, but Grant saw it.
“A photograph of what?” he asked.
Maya swallowed. “Of Helen. And a baby.”
Grant looked from Maya to Helen, then slowly to Vanessa.
Vanessa smiled, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “Maybe you should ask why she’s been hiding family pictures from you.”
Grant took one step toward her.

“Where is the photograph, Vanessa?”
