Chapter 7 - The Lie Vanessa Chose
Grant had known Vanessa long enough to recognize the difference between anger and strategy.
The woman standing in the chapel doorway now was done improvising. She had chosen a story and was going to force it into the room whether it fit or not.
She let out a slow breath and said, “Fine. You want the truth? I went into the study because Helen has been using your father’s things to manipulate you.”
Grant said nothing.
Vanessa took that as permission to continue.
“She told me your father left evidence that would ‘change everything.’ She kept hinting that after the wedding, things might not go the way I expected. She wanted leverage.”
Helen looked stunned. “That’s a lie.”
“No,” Vanessa said. “What’s true is that she knows exactly how attached you are to this house, this family name, this inheritance. So she built a shrine out of one old letter and one photograph, and now she’s pretending she was protecting you.”
Grant looked at Helen. “Did you warn Vanessa about the wedding?”
Helen hesitated. “I told her only this house didn’t belong to someone who humiliated people.”
Vanessa gave a humorless smile. “Exactly. She’s been poisoning you against me.”
Grant’s expression didn’t change. “And the picture?”
Vanessa answered quickly. “An affair. Obviously.”
The word landed in the chapel like a stone.
Maya stepped forward. “You don’t even believe that.”
Vanessa snapped, “Oh, I believe she wanted more than a mop and a staff room.”
Grant turned slowly toward her. “Say that again.”
But Vanessa had already committed herself. “Your father kept her close, gave her the family name, hid letters, hid photos. What exactly do you think that means?”
Grant didn’t answer because, for the first time, the simplest explanation no longer felt right.
An affair might explain a hidden photo.
It did not explain why Theodore would order Helen to keep a letter until Grant turned forty-two.
It did not explain the bracelet with his initials.
And it certainly did not explain why Helen looked shattered rather than triumphant at the idea of the truth coming out.
Then Maya said quietly, “If it was only an affair, why did Mr. Parker write that Grant would hate him?”
No one spoke after that.
The silence itself became the answer.

And in that silence, Grant realized Vanessa was trying to drag him toward the most obvious scandal so he would never look for the deeper one.
