Chapter 13 - The Name Vanessa Finally Said Out Loud
Vanessa held out longer than Grant expected.
He asked once, twice, then simply stood in front of her and waited. Grant Parker had inherited many unpleasant things from Theodore, but stillness under pressure was one of the useful ones. He could outlast almost anyone when he wanted the truth.
Vanessa finally broke first.
“Yes,” she said. “I spoke to Steven.”
Helen closed her eyes as if the words themselves were exhausting.
“What did he tell you?” Grant asked.
“That Helen was dangerous. That she had always wanted more than she got. That if the story came out before the wedding, trustees would swarm, the board would freeze movement, and every asset conversation would become a circus.” She laughed weakly. “He said you would forgive cruelty faster than chaos.”
Grant’s mouth hardened into a line.
Maya muttered, “He was wrong.”
Vanessa nodded once. “He also said the photo and letters were sentimental leverage. He told me if I removed them, Helen would have nothing except old tears and impossible claims.”
Grant took one step closer. “So you humiliated her to frighten her.”
“Yes.”
“And you burned the letter.”
Vanessa hesitated. “I tried.”
“Helen was never the target,” Grant said. “She was the lock, and you wanted the key broken.”
Vanessa didn’t deny it.
Then she said something that made even Helen look up.
“I didn’t know she was your mother at first. Not for sure. I only knew Steven was terrified of her.”
Grant stared at her.
“That was enough for you?”
Vanessa’s voice cracked. “I have spent my whole life learning that when powerful families fear a quiet woman, that woman can destroy your future.”
Grant’s expression did not soften. “No. What destroys a future is what you choose to do when you’re afraid.”
Vanessa looked away.
And in that moment, for the first time all day, Grant no longer saw a fiancée he had almost married.
