Chapter 10 - Victoria Finally Explained Herself

Victoria agreed to meet Daniel privately three weeks after the engagement party.

Claire did not attend.

That was deliberate.

This was not another scene in which Victoria got to turn Claire into the subject while avoiding responsibility to her son.

Daniel met his mother at the office of her attorney.

Victoria looked smaller than usual without the mansion around her.

Still elegant.

Still controlled.

But no longer certain she could dictate the emotional terms.

Daniel asked one question.

“Why?”

Victoria tried to start with Claire.

Daniel stopped her.

“No. Why did you destroy the prenup?”

Victoria’s mouth tightened.

“Because I knew what would happen once you married her.”

“What?”

“You’d become hers.”

Daniel stared at her.

“I’m not property.”

“That’s easy to say when you haven’t watched a woman slowly separate your son from everything he was raised to value.”

“She didn’t separate me from anything.”

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“She made you question me.”

That was the truth, finally.

Not money.

Not really.

Claire had not taken Daniel away.

She had simply created a relationship in which Daniel started asking whether the patterns he grew up with were healthy.

To Victoria, questioning felt like abandonment.

Daniel asked about the landlord.

Victoria admitted it too.

She said Claire was proud of being independent, so she wanted to show Daniel how quickly that independence would collapse.

“And when she needed me?” Daniel asked.

“I thought you’d finally see what she was.”

“You mean what you made her look like.”

Victoria said nothing.

Then Daniel asked about the loan.

Her expression changed.

She called the promissory note humiliating.

Said family should not treat family like creditors.

Said Daniel’s father would never have put her debts on a disclosure schedule for an outsider to see.

“Claire was going to be my wife,” Daniel said.

“She wasn’t family yet.”

Daniel understood then that Victoria’s definition of family was never about love.

It was about rank.

Who was inside.

Who was outside.

Who had permission to know.

Who was expected to obey.

May you like

And Claire would never be safe inside a family structured that way.
