Chapter 8 - The Two-Million-Dollar Loan Was Worse Than Daniel Remembered
The promissory note became important for another reason.
When Daniel’s accountant reviewed it, he found that Victoria had not merely stopped paying.
She had quietly been receiving additional support.
For the previous three years, Bennett Family Management had covered various expenses associated with the Beacon Hill townhouse—property staffing, insurance advances, art-storage fees, and several maintenance bills. Some were legitimate family-office expenses under old arrangements.
Others were not.
The line had blurred because Victoria spent decades behaving as though family administration and her personal finances were essentially the same thing.
Daniel’s father had tolerated it.
After his death, Daniel did too.
Until Claire entered his life and outside counsel began cleaning up financial boundaries ahead of the marriage.
That was the real trigger.
Claire did not come into the family demanding money.
Her arrival caused professionals around Daniel to formalize money that had previously flowed without scrutiny.
Suddenly Victoria had a promissory note on a disclosure schedule.
Suddenly household expenses required classification.
Suddenly Daniel’s accountant asked whether payments benefiting Victoria were gifts, loans, distributions, or reimbursable family-office costs.
Victoria experienced ordinary financial clarity as an attack.
And because Claire’s engagement coincided with those changes, she blamed Claire.
The accountant estimated that beyond the $1.85 million note, approximately $340,000 in personal expenses had been covered in ways that required review and possible reclassification.
This was not theft on the scale of some fantasy scandal.
It was something more believable:
A powerful parent had spent years treating her adult son’s resources as extensions of her own lifestyle.
Then another woman entered his life and boundaries appeared.
Victoria could not tolerate the change.
Claire finally understood that the prenup was never dangerous to Victoria because it gave Claire too much.
