Chapter 12 - The Prenup Was Signed Again
Six months after the party, Claire and Daniel sat in a conference room with separate attorneys and signed another prenup.
This time, nobody from the Bennett family touched the paperwork.
Claire’s lawyer held her executed copy.
Daniel’s lawyer held his.
Electronic scans went to both offices immediately.
The agreement looked almost identical to the one Victoria destroyed.
Claire still waived claims against Daniel’s family trust.
Daniel still waived claims against Claire’s separate assets.
The marriage provisions remained fair and ordinary.
The final financial schedules included the promissory note owed by Victoria.
They also included updated disclosures concerning the household expenses under review.
Claire read every page.
Then she signed.
Daniel signed his counterpart fifteen minutes later.
Afterward, Daniel looked almost amused.
“My mother spent months trying to prove you wouldn’t sign this.”
Claire capped her pen.
“She never cared whether I signed.”
“What do you mean?”
“She cared about controlling what the signature would prove.”
Daniel thought about that.
Claire continued.
“If I signed, she couldn’t call me a gold digger without lying in a way everyone could see. And if I saw your disclosures, I’d know she was the one financially tied to you.”
Daniel nodded slowly.
The prenup itself had never threatened Victoria’s wealth.
It threatened her narrative.
