Chapter 7 - Daniel Had To Admit How Much His Silence Helped Her
Claire did not immediately forgive Daniel simply because Victoria had manipulated him.
That would have been too easy.
They were sitting across from each other in the hotel suite when Claire said:
“You knew she was calling me a gold digger.”
Daniel nodded.
“You knew she hated that I wanted my own apartment.”
“Yes.”
“You knew she owed you money and never told me.”
“That wasn’t because I thought you didn’t deserve to know. I considered it her private business.”
“It stopped being private when she used me to protect it.”
Daniel had no answer.
Claire continued.
“Every time she insulted me, you told her to stop after the fact. Then you acted like the problem was over because the room got quiet.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
That was accurate.
He had grown up inside Victoria’s emotional system. She was not always cruel. That made her harder to recognize. She could be generous, funny, and fiercely loyal when she felt secure. But whenever Daniel made a decision that reduced her influence, she became wounded, accusatory, or controlling.
He learned early that the fastest way to restore peace was to soften boundaries.
Then he met Claire.
Claire did not function that way.
She asked direct questions.
Expected direct answers.
And refused to perform gratitude simply because Victoria was wealthy or socially powerful.
Victoria interpreted that as disrespect.
Daniel spent too long trying to stand between them without actually choosing a side.
Now he understood neutrality had been a choice too.
“I should have stopped this months ago,” he said.
Claire didn’t rescue him from the truth.
“Yes.”
He nodded.
Then she added:
“But you can stop it now.”
That became the dividing line.
Claire did not need Daniel to hate his mother.
