Chapter 14 - Claire Asked Daniel One Last Question Before The Wedding
Their wedding eventually took place almost a year after the engagement party.
Much smaller.
No Bennett mansion.
No ballroom designed to impress hundreds of people.
They chose a restored historic hotel overlooking Boston Harbor and invited only the people who had supported the relationship rather than managed it.
Victoria was not invited.
The decision was Daniel’s.
Claire asked him one final question the night before the ceremony.
“If your mother apologized tomorrow, would you want her there?”
Daniel took his time answering.
“I’d want her capable of being there.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
He smiled sadly.
“No.”
Claire studied him.
“Why?”
“Because an apology would be words. I’d need a pattern.”
That answer told her he finally understood.
The problem had never been one slap.
One apartment.
One missing prenup.
One cruel accusation.
The problem was the pattern linking them all.
Victoria repeatedly created instability, then positioned herself as the only person qualified to interpret it. She produced evidence that Claire was dependent. She removed evidence that Claire was independent. She punished Daniel whenever he questioned her. Then she called all of it protection.
An apology could not undo that.
Changed behavior might, someday.
But reconciliation was no longer a deadline.
Claire leaned against Daniel and realized something surprising.
She was no longer afraid Victoria would win.
Not because Victoria had lost money or status.
