Chapter 10 - My Father Had Used Me as His Best Witness

There was one final record.
A letter my mother had written to her sister two days after Elaine’s arrest.
My aunt still had it.
The letter said:
Charles is furious Grant told police he didn’t see the beginning. His lawyer had him sign another statement today. Grant asked me if he was lying. I told him to listen to his father. I hate myself for it.
I read that paragraph until the words blurred.
Suddenly three details from the past aligned.
My father insisting I “tell the truth.”
The revised statement.
My mother refusing to discuss Elaine afterward.
They had not simply believed I witnessed the attack.
They knew I hadn’t.
They converted a frightened teenager’s partial observation into certainty because certainty protected my father.
That realization changed the whole story.
Lenora had spent twenty-four years believing I consciously lied to destroy her mother.
I had spent twenty-four years believing I accurately described what I saw.
The truth sat between those versions.
I was manipulated.
But I still signed.
I was a child.
But my signature still had consequences.
My father carried the greater responsibility.
That did not erase mine.
And Lenora’s justified anger at the old injustice did not erase what she had done to Vanessa.
Several truths could coexist without canceling one another.

That was the part every person in this story had failed to understand sooner.
