Chapter 13 - The Old Case Was Corrected, But the Past Stayed Real

Elaine’s criminal record could not simply be erased because twenty-four years had passed and new context had surfaced.

But an attorney helped her petition for relief based on the original interview, the revised statement, and evidence that had never been meaningfully considered.

The process took months.

Nothing magical.

Eventually the old assault matter was formally reviewed and her record received relief that made a practical difference.

Elaine cried when she received the order.

Not because it returned the years.

It didn’t.

Not because it gave Lenora back college.

It couldn’t.

It simply corrected part of a public story that had followed her most of her adult life.

I paid the legal costs.

Elaine initially refused.

I told her:

“This isn’t charity.”

She looked at me.

“I know.”

“It’s the smallest part of what should have happened years ago.”

She accepted.
