Chapter 6 - The Cruelty Started Small

After the attack, I began reviewing the security footage inside the house.
What I saw made the bat incident worse.
Lenora had not begun by hurting Vanessa physically.
She began with control.
If Vanessa refused lunch:
“No snack later.”
If she cried for me:
“Daddy is busy.”
If she wanted to wait by the window when I came home:
“Stop acting like a baby.”
Nothing immediately alarming.
Then the tone changed.
One recording showed Vanessa carrying a picture she had drawn for me.
Lenora took it.
“You think Daddy keeps everything you make?”
Vanessa nodded.
Lenora threw it into the trash.
Another day, Vanessa asked why Lenora looked sad.
Lenora replied:
“Because your daddy hurts people.”
Vanessa didn’t understand.
Neither did I when I first watched it.
Then another clip.
Vanessa asked:
“Did Daddy hurt you?”
Lenora stared at her for several seconds.
Then answered:
“He hurt my family.”
She was feeding a four-year-old pieces of a grievance the child could never process.
Slowly, Vanessa began becoming uneasy around her.
That made Lenora angrier.
She had wanted some impossible moral symmetry.
Instead, the innocent child she resented still loved her father.
So Lenora escalated.
The day of the baseball bat was not planned as murder.
That distinction mattered legally and morally.
But it was still terrifying.
She later admitted she intended to drag Vanessa outside and leave her crying on the front step long enough for me to come home and see what it felt like to have your family thrown out of a house.
Then Vanessa fought back.
Lenora lost control.
She grabbed the bat.

And whatever symbolic revenge existed in her mind became a real threat against a four-year-old child.
