Chapter 8 - Elaine Had Injuries Nobody Explained
The police file contained photographs.
Not only of my father.
Of Elaine.
There were finger-shaped bruises around her upper arm.
A scrape along her wrist.
A torn sleeve.
The original responding officer wrote:
Parker states employer grabbed her during argument regarding unpaid wages and unwanted physical contact.
That sentence never appeared in the family story I grew up with.
There was more.
A neighbor employed on the estate told police she heard Elaine yell:
“Stop touching me.”
My father denied everything.
His attorney called the witness unreliable.
Then Elaine accepted the plea.
Why?
Because she had no money.
Because she had a daughter depending on her.
Because my father offered not to seek jail time if she accepted responsibility and left the property quietly.
It did not prove every detail of Elaine’s account beyond doubt.
But it destroyed the version where she simply attacked my father without provocation.
For the first time in twenty-four years, I had to face the possibility that Elaine had been defending herself.
