Chapter 4 - Lenora Lost Her Home Because of My Statement

Elaine was charged with assault.

The case never went to a dramatic jury trial.

She accepted a plea.

Probation.

Mandatory counseling.

No jail beyond the initial detention.

But legal punishment was only part of the damage.

My father fired her immediately.

The staff cottage belonged to the estate.

Elaine and Lenora had thirty days to leave.

My father made it fourteen.

He also refused to give Elaine a reference.

For a domestic worker who had spent seven years with one family, that was devastating.

Lenora had just finished her first semester at community college.

She dropped out.

They stayed briefly with relatives.

Then in a weekly motel.

Elaine eventually found cleaning work in offices at night.

None of that was visible to me.

My father told me:

“They’re fine.”

I believed him because believing him was easier than asking where they went.

Years passed.

College.

Career.

Marriage.

Divorce.

Vanessa’s birth.

My father died before she was born.

The incident with Elaine became one of those ugly childhood memories that adults learn to place behind a closed door.

Until Lenora broke that door open in my living room.
