Chapter 14 - Daniel Lost Me Long Before The Divorce Was Final

The divorce took eleven months.

Daniel fought harder than I expected at first, mostly because he still seemed to believe remorse automatically restored access.

It didn’t.

His lawyers tried to argue that he’d never intended financial harm.

Our lawyers argued intent didn’t matter as much as conduct.

He had exposed my medical privacy.

He had emotionally abandoned me during a high-risk pregnancy.

He had stood over me after I was struck.

He had allowed another woman to help create conditions that could have jeopardized my rights as a mother.

Those facts were enough.

Vanessa’s situation collapsed faster.

The hospital investigation confirmed she had impersonated an authorized family representative to influence my file.

That alone ended several things at once: her access, her reputation, and her relationship with Daniel.

He learned too late that women like Vanessa don’t fall in love with indecisive men.

They recruit them.

By the time the divorce was final, Daniel had lost more than a marriage.

He lost access to my trust, to my father’s goodwill, to the public image he valued, and eventually to the executive role he’d held at his firm after the scandal made him a liability.

We ended up with structured custody, supervised at first, then gradually expanded as Grace got older and as Daniel proved he could show up consistently.

He loved his daughter.

I believe that.

But love without courage had already done enough damage in my life.

I refused to build my future on it again.
