Chapter 2 - The Man Who Let Me Fall

The security officers slowed as they recognized my father.
Richard Carter was not just another wealthy man in a hospital corridor. He sat on the board of the women’s health foundation that funded half the maternal wing.
When he told security to preserve the camera footage immediately, they listened.
Vanessa was still clutching her cheek, stunned into silence for the first time in her life.
Daniel finally stepped forward, as if he had just remembered I existed.
“Emily,” he said, reaching toward me.
I flinched back.
His hand froze in midair.
That tiny movement changed his face.
Not to guilt.
To irritation.
As if I were embarrassing him again.
My father saw it too.
“Don’t touch her,” he said flatly.
Vanessa tried to recover her voice first. “Richard, you don’t understand—”
“I understand that my daughter is eight months pregnant and your handprint is on her face.”
“She was provoking us,” Daniel muttered.
I turned so sharply I almost lost my balance again.
“Provoking you?”
My father’s eyes shifted to Daniel, and something in them went from fury to finality.
He didn’t shout.
That was worse.
“If you say one more word before your wife is medically checked, Daniel, I’ll make sure the next conversation you have is with her attorney.”
The nurses finally moved in then.
A blonde charge nurse touched my elbow gently. “Mrs. Carter, let’s get you into a room and check the baby.”
I nodded because suddenly I couldn’t trust myself to speak.
As they led me away, I glanced back once.
Daniel was standing beside Vanessa.
May you like
Not beside me.
That image followed me all the way into the examination room.
