Chapter 3 - The Day Vanessa Stopped Hiding

Vanessa hadn’t always been so obvious.
When Daniel first mentioned her, she was just a consultant working with his firm on a luxury redevelopment project in Charleston. Smart. Polished. Efficient. Good with investors.
I met her at a charity dinner six months before the hospital incident.
She’d smiled too brightly when Daniel introduced us.
“So this is Emily,” she’d said, like she’d been hearing my name far too often.
At the time, I ignored the strange note in her voice. I was newly pregnant after two devastating miscarriages, and most of my energy went into staying calm, staying healthy, and praying this baby made it safely into the world.
Daniel was attentive in the beginning.
He came to appointments. Rubbed my back when I couldn’t sleep. Read every ridiculous article about fetal development as if he were cramming for an exam.
Then things shifted.
He began missing dinners.
Taking calls outside.
Sleeping with his phone face down.
By the seventh month, he had become a man who sat beside me without really being with me.
Every time I asked what was wrong, he said the same thing.
“Work is a mess.”
It was never just work.
I knew that before I saw the first message.
An anonymous text arrived three weeks before the hospital incident.
It contained a photo of Daniel getting into Vanessa’s car outside a hotel in Boston.
Then another.
Then a third.
At first I told myself there had to be an explanation.
By the time I confronted him, I already knew there wasn’t.

What I didn’t know was why he had become so cold so fast.
Or why Vanessa seemed so strangely confident—not just that she could take my husband, but that she could take my entire place.
