Chapter 4 - Why I Was At The Hospital That Day

The morning of the confrontation, I hadn’t gone to the hospital looking for my husband.

I went because my baby hadn’t been moving the way she normally did.

By then I was so protective, so anxious, that every quiet hour made my chest tighten. My doctor always told me not to wait if something felt wrong.

So I called.

They told me to come in for monitoring.

Daniel was supposed to meet me there.

He didn’t answer my first call.

Or my second.

When I finally reached him, he sounded distracted.

“I’m on my way,” he said.

I arrived alone, checked in alone, and sat alone for twenty minutes until I decided to walk toward the private consultation wing and look for him myself.

That was when I saw them.

Vanessa had both hands looped around his arm.

Not casually.

Possessively.

Like a woman who had already decided she belonged there.

They were standing just outside a glass treatment room, speaking in low voices. Daniel looked tense. Vanessa looked annoyed.

Then she saw me.

And instead of stepping back like a woman caught doing something shameful, she smiled.

Slowly.

Like she’d been waiting for this.

Daniel turned around, saw me, and his entire expression hardened.

“Emily, why are you out here?”

I stared between them. “Why is she here?”

Vanessa answered before he did.

“Because somebody has to handle things when you turn everything into drama.”

I should have turned and asked for security right then.

Instead, I made the mistake women in collapsing marriages make every day.

I kept hoping the man I loved would suddenly act like himself again.

He didn’t.
