Chapter 1 - The Slap at the Front Door

The slap came so fast I barely saw Ethan’s hand move.
One second I was standing in the center of the mansion foyer, crying and begging him to stop shouting at me, and the next, his palm struck my face so hard that my head snapped to the side.
The sound cracked through the bright marble space.
My cheek exploded with pain.
Instinctively, one hand flew to my face while the other covered my belly.
Our baby.
That was all I thought about first. Not myself. Not the humiliation. Not the sting in my skin. Just the life growing inside me and the desperate need to keep my body between that child and the rage standing in front of me.
Ethan glared at me without a trace of remorse. His white dress shirt was half unbuttoned at the collar, his dark hair messy from pacing, his whole body vibrating with the kind of temper that used to frighten me only after the fact. Lately, it frightened me in real time.
“Stop crying,” he said viciously. “You’re pathetic.”
Several feet away, his mother, Lorraine, stood in her champagne satin dress and watched as if none of this had anything to do with her.
I stared at Ethan through tears.
“You hit me while I’m carrying your baby.”
My voice shook, but I forced the words out.
For half a second, nobody moved.
Then the open front doors framed a new figure.
My brother.
Cole Bennett.
He stepped into the foyer like a storm with two silent security men behind him. Tall, broad-shouldered, dressed in black, he took one look at my face, my tears, and the hand covering my pregnant belly—and his expression turned murderous.
“YOU PUT YOUR HANDS ON MY SISTER?!”
Ethan turned sharply.
“This is my marriage,” he snapped. “Stay out of it.”
But Cole was already crossing the marble floor.
Lorraine’s composure cracked first. I saw it happen in her eyes. She had watched her son slap me without blinking—but the moment my brother kept coming, the certainty in her face began to drain away.
Cole reached me and stepped directly in front of me, shielding me with his body.
I had not realized how alone I had felt until that moment.
He didn’t even look back at me. He kept his eyes locked on Ethan.
“You hit my sister,” Cole said coldly. “Now you answer to me.”
Then he drove his fist straight into Ethan’s jaw.
The punch landed with a sickening thud.
Ethan stumbled backward several steps, clutching his face, stunned.
Lorraine gasped.
The two security men remained still, waiting.
Cole didn’t go after Ethan again. He just stood there in front of me like a wall and lowered his fist.
That was the moment I knew something in my life had split open for good.
Because my brother had seen it.
May you like
And once Cole saw something, he never let it go.
