But he never stopped himself.
He still struck me.

And she was right.
Lorraine, meanwhile, turned on him in response.
She denied everything, accused him of weakness, and insisted he was now “betraying his mother to please an emotional woman.”

That phrase followed me through the entire marriage.

One afternoon after another round of legal filings, Cole joined me on the patio while James slept inside.
“Do you want him ruined?” he asked.
I looked out across the garden.
“I want him stopped.”
