Chapter 2 - What Cole Saw in My Face

The second Ethan staggered back, Cole turned toward me.
All the fury in him shifted into something worse—quiet horror.
His eyes moved over my face, then to the hand I kept pressed protectively over my stomach.
“Did he touch your belly?” he asked.
I shook my head.
“No.”
My voice cracked on the single word.
That answer relieved him—but only a little.
He reached for me carefully, like he was afraid I might break if he moved too fast. “Come here.”
The second I stepped toward him, I fell apart.
I didn’t sob dramatically. I just folded into him, one hand still holding my belly while the other clutched the back of his jacket. Cole wrapped an arm around my shoulders and held me steady.
Behind us, Ethan straightened, still rubbing his jaw.
“You don’t get to walk in here and act like some hero,” he said.
Cole didn’t even turn around.
“You’re lucky,” he said flatly, “that I saw her standing.”
I pulled back enough to look at Ethan myself.
This wasn’t the first time he had humiliated me. It wasn’t even the first time he had frightened me. But it was the first time anyone from my side of the family had witnessed it with their own eyes.
And Ethan knew it.
Lorraine tried to recover her poise.
“Cole,” she said, her tone sharpening, “whatever disagreement they were having, this does not justify you assaulting my son in his own home.”
Cole finally looked at her.
“Your son assaulted my pregnant sister.”
Lorraine lifted her chin. “Hailey is emotional. Pregnancy has made her unstable.”
That was so cold, so effortless, I actually laughed once through my tears.
Unstable.
That was the word they used every time Ethan cornered me, every time Lorraine undermined me, every time I tried to object to decisions being made about my life as if I were a guest in my own marriage.
Cole heard it too.
He turned to me slowly. “Has she been doing this?”
I wiped my face. “Not hitting me.”
Lorraine crossed her arms. “Then perhaps you should all stop exaggerating.”
I looked at her.
“No,” I said quietly. “I think I’m done minimizing it.”
Ethan’s face darkened.
“You’re not leaving this house and telling people I abuse you.”
Cole gave a humorless smile. “That’s the problem with witnesses, Ethan. You don’t get to control the story anymore.”
The silence that followed was thick and ugly.
Then Cole said the words I think I needed most:
“Hailey, pack a bag. You’re coming with me.”
May you like
And for the first time in months, I didn’t hesitate.
