Chapter 9 - Cole Found the One Thing Ethan Never Meant Me to See

The breakthrough came from a storage room.
More specifically, a locked study cabinet at the mansion that my legal team gained access to during the financial review.
Inside were folders Ethan assumed no one else would ever examine closely.
One contained trust projections.
Another contained correspondence with a private adviser Lorraine had been consulting.
And in one email chain, Valerie found exactly what we needed.
Lorraine had written:
Once the child’s transfer activates, Hailey must be persuaded to sign immediately. If sentiment fails, pressure may be necessary.
Pressure.
My hands trembled when I read it.
Cole read over my shoulder and went absolutely still.
There was another line from Ethan below it:
She’s getting stubborn. I’ll handle her.
I sat down because my knees suddenly felt weak.
There it was.
Not just greed.
Not just cruelty.
Strategy.
Planned emotional pressure before the slap. Planned coercion around the baby’s trust. And after all of it, they had still expected me to stay quiet.
Valerie looked at me gently. “This changes the case.”
I laughed once, bitterly. “It changes my whole marriage.”
Cole crouched beside my chair.
“No,” he said. “It reveals what it always was.”
That night, I didn’t sleep much.
Not because I was afraid anymore.
Because I was mourning the last piece of illusion.
Even after the slap, some part of me had still wanted to believe Ethan lost control in one terrible moment.
Those emails destroyed that lie.
He hadn’t simply exploded.
He had escalated inside a plan.
May you like
And his mother had helped write it.
