Chapter 6 - Lorraine Made Her First Big Mistake

People like Lorraine always think their power lies in poise.

But poise fails the moment they believe they still control the room.

Three days after I left, Valerie arranged a formal property retrieval from the mansion with neutral witnesses present.

Cole came with me.

So did one of his security men and a legal representative.

Ethan wasn’t home.

Lorraine was.

She met us in the foyer wearing pearls and contempt.

“This is vulgar,” she said. “Turning private tension into a spectacle.”

Valerie replied calmly, “We’re here for Mrs. Monroe’s belongings.”

Lorraine looked at me.

“Hailey, if you do this publicly, you will regret it.”

I said nothing.

I had learned that silence unsettled her more than tears ever did.

While the staff packed my remaining вещи, Lorraine kept circling, needling, baiting, pretending she was above it all.

Then she made her mistake.

She followed me into the upstairs sitting room and lowered her voice.

“You do realize Ethan only got angry because you refused to understand what was good for your child.”

I turned slowly.

“What’s good for my child?”

“That trust,” she said impatiently. “It would have been better managed by people with actual experience.”

There it was.

Not grief.

Not family concern.

Not emotional instability.

Money.

She saw the flash in my face and realized too late what she had said.

I stepped closer.

“So this was about my child’s trust?”

Her mouth tightened.

“You always were slow.”

Valerie appeared in the doorway at that exact moment.

She had heard enough.

Lorraine tried to recover. “I was referring to general family planning.”

Valerie gave her a long look. “Of course.”

Later, in the car, Valerie said, “That statement helps.”

Cole gripped the steering wheel harder.

“She practically admitted motive.”

“Not fully,” Valerie said. “But enough to paint the pattern.”

I stared out the window as the mansion disappeared behind us.

For years, I had believed Ethan was the danger and Lorraine was the poison around him.

Now I understood something else.

He may have been the one who slapped me.

But Lorraine had been building the logic that made him feel entitled to do it.

And that kind of woman never stops unless someone finally forces her to.
