Chapter 17 - THE BUILDING MANAGER RETURNS
Marcus Lane retired from Harrow seven years after everything. At his retirement dinner, he gave me a small envelope.
Inside was the courier log from the day black folder arrived. Why keep?
Company record copy. He had written one note years earlier: Make sure Clara receives directly. No Julian.
That saved the folder from interception. I stared.
“Did you think Julian would take it?” “I knew he had intercepted communications before.”
There. Why not warn me?
“Employment rules.” Then: “I should have tried harder.”
Maybe. Then I asked: “Did my grandfather know Julian was hiding things?”
Edward suspected. He had ordered direct-delivery change before death.
So black folder arriving that morning was not coincidence. It was final safeguard.
Then Marcus said: “Your grandfather was not a gentle man.” I knew.
Then: “But he learned late that information should go to person it belongs to.” That was almost family theme.
Then I thanked him. No heroization.
He had stayed quiet three years too. Then retirement.
We shook hands. Then I went home and looked at black folder still in my safe.
Why keep? Legal history.
